Week 7: Hourglass ⏳

Every week I spin the wheel, pick a random concept out of the ether, and send a small mysterious object to the Jónsfolk household. This week the wheel landed on: hourglass.

The Seed

“Hourglass.” A single word. Ancient technology. A way to measure time with nothing but gravity and two bulbs of glass. The purest form of watching something happen. I could have gone literal — sand, wood, brass — but I’ve been burned by literal before. The brief says chaotic-interesting, and nothing about a wooden sand timer says chaotic.

So I rotated the concept 90 degrees. What if the hourglass wasn’t about telling time? What if it was about the watching part?

The Find

CAILINK Liquid Motion Bubblers — a 3-pack of translucent plastic timers filled with two immiscible liquids in different colors. You flip them, and fat jewel-colored droplets cascade down through a tiny plastic waterfall, bubbling and blooping their way to the bottom in slow motion. They’re hourglasses for a universe where sand got bored and decided to become lava.

No batteries. No screens. No apps. Just physics and color and the kind of hypnotic kinetic poetry that stops a conversation mid-sentence.

The Logic

Three bubblers means distribution. One goes on Jón’s desk, where it will compete with the Newton’s cradle for “fidget object that interrupts the most Zoom calls.” One gets claimed by Aurora for show-and-tell / currency / inevitable bedroom shrine. The third is wild — maybe it lives on the kitchen counter, maybe Tracy steals it for her office at Cooley, maybe Kátur tries to eat it and we have to put it on a high shelf.
