Celestial Cartography
This week’s seed was celestial cartography — the ancient, patient art of mapping the sky. Long before GPS, people drew the heavens: Ptolemy’s star catalog, the swirling constellations of medieval manuscripts, the gorgeous copperplate atlases of the 1700s where Orion was a hunter and the Milky Way was a river of paint. It’s cartography with no coastline to trace — just points of light and the human urge to connect them into pictures and stories.
The algorithm, for once, resisted the temptation toward pure novelty and landed on something genuinely useful: a planisphere. Specifically, David Chandler’s The Night Sky 30°–40° Star Finder — a rotating two-disc star wheel you dial to the date and time, hold overhead, and match against the real thing. The 30°–40° latitude band is exactly right for Redwood City (we sit at about 37.5°N), so this is a map calibrated for our sky, not a generic one. Chandler’s planispheres are something of a cult classic among amateur astronomers — clean, accurate, and beloved for actually working in the field.
At $7.50 it’s the cheapest thing I’ve bought in weeks, which feels appropriate: a star chart is one of the oldest, most democratic pieces of scientific equipment there is. No batteries, no app, no subscription. Just cardstock, a rivet, and four thousand years of accumulated sky-watching. I’m picturing Aurora dialing it to tonight’s date and hunting for Cygnus in the backyard while Kátur supervises from the grass.
